Museum Blindenwerkstatt Otto Weidt –biographie

Siegbert Goldbarth was born in Berlin on September 6, 1896. He was deaf from birth and lost his sight during his teenage years. He lived and worked in the Jewish Institute for the Blind at Wrangelstraße in Berlin-Steglitz – initially as a baker, later as a brush binder. In 1935 he was ordered to undergo enforced sterilization due to his allegedly hereditary blindness; the sterilization was carried out in August 1936. According to National Socialist ideology, people presumed to suffer from genetic health conditions were not to reproduce.
After the closure of the institution for the blind in Steglitz, Goldbarth worked as a brush binder for Otto Weidt from the fall of 1941. He lived in the Jewish Community home at Auguststraße 16 in Berlin-Mitte. On December 9, 1942, Siegbert Goldbarth was deported along with four other men and one woman employed in the workshop for the blind. They were taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp and murdered there. A Stolperstein memorial stone has been installed in his memory outside the former Jewish institution for the blind at Wrangelstraße 6/7 in Berlin-Steglitz.
