Klaus Ulrich Freund was born in Breslau on April 16, 1927 and started school there in about 1933. His family moved to Berlin around 1936. Here, Klaus Freund attended the Jewish Goldschmidt School, among others, until its closure in the fall of 1939. His father, Dr. Hans Freund, a former regional court judge, was an administrative employee in the Berlin Jewish Community’s central office for homes for the elderly.
By 1937 at the latest, the Freund family lived at Heilbronner Straße 21 in Berlin-Schöneberg, from November 1942 at Wielandstraße 29 in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Aged 15, Klaus Freund was the youngest known worker in Otto Weidt’s Workshop for the Blind, where he was a brush binder. On December 9, 1942, he was deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp with his father, his mother Margot, and his 12-year-old brother Heinz Joachim. The whole family was murdered there. A Stolperstein memorial stone has been installed in memory of Klaus Freund outside the building at Heilbronner Straße 21 in Berlin-Schöneberg.
